Alabama has some of the lowest family and single annual premiums among employers nationwide, according to a study conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services.

According to the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, Alabama had the third lowest family and single premiums in the nation in 2016. Arkansas had the lowest for both family and single premiums.

The MEPS survey reported the highest family premiums for 2016 were held in Alaska, Wyoming and New York. States with the highest single premiums for were Alaska followed by Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

“Our company has been serving Alabamians for 81 years, and we are proud to offer our members some of the lowest premiums in the nation. We have experienced success in the marketplace because every decision we make begins with the question: ‘How does this benefit our customer?’," said Terry Kellogg, President, and CEO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. “We have worked hard to earn the trust and confidence of the 2.1 million Alabamians we cover in our state by providing the highest quality coverage at competitive prices. We never lose sight of our customers and are grateful they continue to choose us to provide their healthcare coverage.”

The MEPS is a set of large-scale surveys of families and individuals, their medical providers, and employers across the United States. It is the most complete source of data on the cost and use of health care and health insurance coverage, according to the MEPS website.
