MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

With Summer well underway you might be thinking, what fun things can we do with the kids prior to the start of school?

Might I suggest you take them up to the Alabama Wild Life Headquarters and Natureplex in Millbrook. I discovered this treasure recently and it is a great place for a family outing. You will have the opportunity for your entire family to learn a great deal about the outdoors and the wildlife residing in it.

For five dollars per person, you can walk through the Hands on Discovery Hall learning about Alabama's natural history and its four physiographic regions, the state's National Forests, many of Alabama's rivers and waterways, longleaf pine forests, prairies, and much more. There’s even a walk-in beehive where visitors learn about the importance of our local pollinators as well as seeing the live observation hive.

You can explore the sights and sounds of Alabama's biggest and most beautiful birds of prey. You get to experience a walk-through cave exhibit showcasing Alabama's remarkable abundance of caves and the creatures inside. Some of the storyboards feature unique species in our state; frogs, birds, mussels, fish, and much more!

Tables in the center of the room display touchable items such as skins, skulls, and shells  All that nature in an airconditioned environment.

I suggest starting in the morning while it is a bit cooler to experience true nature along the five miles of beautiful well-marked trails. There is a little bit of something for everyone and all of it sits in our back yard.

Contact the Alabama Wildlife Federation via their website or call them at 285-4550. Enjoy the family time surrounded by nature!
