Montgomery, AL (CNN) -

We're told exercise is key to living a long life, but too much of it can be deadly. The muscles you use to perform could actually suffer from the intensity and cause a life-threatening condition.

A condition called Rhabdomyolysis - or the "breakdown of muscle" - is a possibility for those who participate in extreme exercises like spin classes, crossfit, or intense running. Rhabdomyolysis leads to the release of the toxic protein myoglobin in the bloodstream, which poisons your kidneys.

Doctors are usually able to treat the condition with re-hydrating fluids, but severe cases can result in dialysis. Worst case scenario, surgery may be necessary to alleviate pressure from the muscle.

Don't be fooled into thinking that only exercise newbies are affected. People who work out regularly but push themselves too hard, or try a new exercise targeting different muscles, can get the condition.

So, take it slow and be sure to hydrate before, during, and after your workout.
