OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - Opelika residents have reported scam attempts being made on behalf of Opelika Power Services, and now the company is stepping in to put an end to the trickery.
OPS made social media posts and sent out emails informing their customers of someone trying to scam them out of their money.
" Someone is calling our customers pretending to be us and trying to get them to give credit card information over the phone or even go purchase a prepaid card from CVS or Walgreens and call them back and give them the number," said Opelika Power Services Customer Service Manager, Rebecca Walls.
"Usually, what we try to do is alert our customers so that they are aware that this is happening," Walls explained, "and if they get that phone call just to hang up don't give them any information. So we just try to get that word out there because usually once we get the word out, the phone calls stop."
Opelika Power Services wants to remind customers that the only phone call that you will get from them will be a reminder that your bill is due and they will not ask you to pay that bill over the phone.
"We are never going to call you and ask you to pay your bill over the phone with us. We are not going to call you demanding payment. Now we will send out reminder calls to remind you that your bill is due but those are automated and that does not ask you to pay a bill over the phone" Walls explained.
If you receive a call about your account balance, remember, you can always check that information online.
