CHILTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

A man has been treated and released from a hospital, then transported to the Chilton County Jail after a shooting incident involving law enforcement Sunday evening.

Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon said his deputies responded to reports of a man walking down the road with a gun at County Road 254 near I-65's Exit 212.

When deputies caught up with the man around 5 p.m., he reportedly starting shooting at them. Officers returned fire, wounding the suspect.

"You just have to always be prepared," Shearon said, "because now you just never know what you're going to come in contact with on the road, the problems that we're having out here with guns, mental problems, stuff like that."

Because the incident involved a deputy discharging their service weapon, the case is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.

No deputies were injured in the exchange of gunfire. The suspect's name has not yet been released.
