MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Actor Chuck Norris has endorsed Republican Roy Moore in the U.S. Senate race, according to the Moore campaign.

“Chuck Norris is exactly the kind of guy you want on your side, and I’m honored to have his support as we continue this fight to take our Alabama values to Washington,” Moore said.

Norris starred in the long-running TV series "Walker, Texas Ranger."

“Alabama needs Judge Moore there doing what he’s always done: fighting to protect our constitutional rights to life, religious liberty, and the freedom to protect ourselves and our families. And he will always put principle over politics," Norris said in a statement released by the campaign.

According to an exclusive poll conducted in late July by the Raycom News Network and Strategy Research, U.S. Sen. Luther Strange and Moore are in a statistical tie in the race. U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks is a distant third.

Moore, the former chief justice of the  Alabama Supreme Court, was suspended for the remainder of his term last year after the Alabama Court of the Judiciary ruled he violated judicial ethics by trying to block gay couples from marrying in Alabama.

The primary in the special Senate election is Aug. 15.
