MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A south Alabama man is wanted by police after he apparently ran from his vehicle and jumped into a lake to avoid a checkpoint.

Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox said his deputies were holding a weekend DUI checkpoint on County Road 97 at 48 when the man's vehicle stopped, he got out, then jumped into Lake Eufaula.

While the man vanished, investigators were able to identify him through the abandoned vehicle as Lawrence Larry Wear.

Deputies tried to retrieve Wear from the lake, but Maddox said it was dark. Alabama Game and Fish, along with resources from Georgia were brought in to search the water. Attempts to find Wear were unsuccessful and investigators believed he may have drowned.

Wear's own family has notified investigators, however, that he may be hiding out, Maddox said.

A warrant is active against Ware for attempting to elude police, should he be found.
