HOUSTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

A south Alabama man wanted by police after apparently jumping into a lake to avoid a DUI checkpoint turned himself in Tuesday evening.

Lawrence Wears turned himself in to a bondsman and is now in jail on a $6,300 bond.

Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox said Tuesday his deputies were holding a weekend DUI checkpoint on County Road 97 at 48 when Wears' vehicle stopped, he got out, then he jumped into Lake Eufaula.

Deputies tried to retrieve Wears from the lake. Alabama Game and Fish, along with resources from Georgia were brought in to search the water. Attempts to find Wears in the lake were unsuccessful and investigators believed he may have drowned.

Wears' own family notified investigators, however, that he may be hiding out, Maddox said.

Wears was wanted for child support and attempting to elude police.
