MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The USA South preseason football poll is out and the Huntingdon Hawks were picked to finish in a tie for the top spot.

This isn't new for the Hawks. This is the third straight season that Huntingdon has been ranked number one in the preseason polls, but Head Coach Mike Turk isn't buying into the preseason hype.

"Preseason polls are based on past results more than anything and it's nice to be viewed by our peers as one of the best teams in the league and one of the teams to beat," Turk said. "But this team hasn't proved anything yet. We have a lot of work to do to get to where we want to be."

Huntingdon is sharing the top spot with Maryville College.

The Hawks received four first-place votes and 45 overall points, while Maryville received three first-place votes and 45 points. Behind Huntingdon and Maryville are North Carolina Wesleyan (37 points), Ferum (32 votes), Averett University (25 points), LaGrange College (17 points), Methodist University (16 points), and Greensboro College (7 points).

Backing up the preseason choice is the fact that Huntingdon is the two-time defending conference champion.

The Hawks open their season Sept. 2 at home against Guilford College.
