SLOCOMB, AL (WSFA) -

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair said it best, "To be the man, you gotta beat the man."

That's the mindset the Slocomb Red Tops have entering the 2017 season.

"We really just talked about what it takes to be a champion," said head coach Richard Tisdale. "We don't necessarily name teams, but championship teams and the things that they do is really simple. They just credit the little things, whether it's in the classroom, how I act when I'm in town, how I represent my school."

To be a championship team this year, the Red Tops will have to work through some tough opponents to make it happen.

"We got to worry about us," said Tisdale. "We have to get better with who we are. The schedule's going to change every two years. You're going to get a new one. We can complain about what's on it, or we can deal with her and keep working because we just want to get better and do what we can do every day."

Year two under Tisdale hopes to provide more success than year one.

"We don't want to be our self," said Tisdale. "If we lose, we want it to be the other team beating us and just eliminate the small things and do the little things great."

With 12 seniors leading the charge for Slocomb, that helps take some of the pressure off the younger guys who are needed on the field.

"They're doing a good job," said Tisdale. "We talk about it all the time. We have to teach them to be leaders. We have to show them- we talk about that- you have to show them by doing. You do it and then you show them. You don't talk about it, you show them the way and then they'll follow you."

The Red Tops open up the 2017 season on Sept. 1, when they take on the Rehobeth Rebels.
