MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Hundreds of people called in to a recent 12 News Defenders phone bank, which focused on scams in Alabama. We thank our partners who helped answer the phones. Our expert volunteers came from the AARP, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, the Alabama Attorney General's Office, The Alabama Securities Commission and Central Alabama Crimestoppers.

The AARP offers tips to avoid scams at its website. You can also sign up to receive special fraud alerts from the AARP's Fraud Watch Network. The service is free for anyone, including non-AARP members.

If you would like to report a scam or fraudulent business practice, The Alabama Attorney General's Consumer Interest Division wants to hear from you. This office can help mediate between parties and even prosecute illegal activity. You will find an online submission form here.

If you have been the victim of a scam in the local area, you can report the crime to your local police or sheriff's office. Montgomery police also encourage you to follow them on social media for crime-prevention tips. You'll find them on Facebook and Next Door.

The Alabama Securities Commission provides assistance to those who may have been victimized by fraudulent financial advisers or bogus investment schemes. Before you invest, the commission also can help you check the firm's validity. Visit its website for details.

Finally, if a scam artist steals your identity, you should report it to the Federal Trade Commission (in addition to filing a regular police report). If someone used your identity to open fraudulent credit card accounts, you will also want to contact the three major credit bureaus.
