BCSO: Facebook threats lead to arrest of Bay Minette man after Las Vegas shooting

BAY MINETTE, AL (WALA) -

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday announced the arrest of Joel Logan Gilliam, 23, of Bay Minette for the crime of making a terroristic threat.

On Monday the Bay Minette Police Department and the BCSO received numerous complaints that a man was on Facebook making threats of violence against the citizens of Bay Minette, according to the Sheriff's Office. The threats were related to the mass murder of concert goers in Las Vegas hours earlier, the Sheriff's Office said.

Law enforcement officers from Baldwin County and the FBI  began an investigation into the threats, a news release states. Gilliam was identified as the suspect, and the Facebook information was captured by the officers with the assistance of the Alabama Fusion Center, according to the news release.

Deputies signed a warrant for one count of making a terroristic threat, a Class C Felony.

Gilliam was taken into custody without incident.  A search of a residence did not yield any firearms and none have been recovered during the investigation. according to the Sheriff's Office.

Gilliam was interviewed by law enforcement where he confessed to making the statements on his Facebook account, BCSO said.

Gilliam told deputies that he was bored and wanted to see how people would react to his Facebook posts. Gilliam showed no remorse in the interview and continually stated the posts were a joke, according to the BCSO

Gilliam is being held in the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Corrections Center without bond pending a judicial hearing.
