MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Montgomery's Hyundai plant will soon see an expansion to strengthen its competitiveness in the U.S. market, according to an article published by a South Korean business magazine.

While BusinessKorea says the South Korean automaker will pour $270 million into the Montgomery plant expansion during the second half of 2018, officials at the plant are pumping the brakes on the report.

When asked about the report, Robert Burns, a spokesman for Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, shared a statement from Hyundai Motor Company that states:

"Hyundai Motor Company, as any other global automaker, is always reviewing the best product portfolio for individual markets. We have not made any decisions about production changes at our U.S. plant at this time."

BusinessKorea reports the expansion would boost the plant's production by 80,000 per year and is meant to focus the company's attention on producing more mid-sized SUVs.
