Early morning customers at a south Alabama Waffle House saw their meals interrupted after a fight broke out and then a shooting.

Enterprise police responded to the eatery on Boll Weevil Circle just before 4:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found the victim suffering a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported by medical helicopter to an area hospital.

An investigation showed the suspect and victim in a verbal altercation that turned physical inside the restaurant. Both left the restaurant and continued fighting in the parking lot.

Authorities say the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old New Brockton resident Joshua Clayton Ward, pulled a gun and fired a single shot, striking the victim in the leg.

Ward has since been arrested and taken to the Coffee County Jail. He's being held on a first-degree assault charge.

The severity of the victim's injuries has not been released nor has a possible motive for what sparked the incident.
