DALLAS COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

The Selma Police Department says it's working a murder-suicide investigation after finding a woman's body Tuesday, then learning her ex-husband's body had also been found in the Birmingham area.

Selma police said the woman, Mary Elizabeth Scott, 35, and her two young children were reported missing Monday. Investigators used the ping of the woman's cell phone in an attempt to locate her.

The ping took investigators to a wooded area near Dallas County Road 540. There, police found her body in the trunk of a car. It appears she'd been shot to death.

Based on initial investigation it appears Mary Elizabeth Scott was traveling to the residence to pick up her daughters. when her husband shot her.

While investigating the discovery of the woman's body, Selma police learned the body of her ex-husband, Gregory Scott, 63, was found in front of a funeral home in the Birmingham area.

Police said Gregory Scott worked at a mental health center in Selma. His death is being called a suicide.

Carrie Bearden, executive director with Cahaba Mental Health Services, said Gregory Scott was a social worker at the facility.

According to court records, the Mary Elizabeth and Gregory Scott married in April 2013 and divorced earlier in November. Custody of the children was given to the mother.

Greg Scott had filed a request Monday for his sister to have custody but a judge had yet to rule on the matter.

The children were found safe with family in the Birmingham area.
