ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) -

There’s just something special about cutting down your own Christmas tree.

As you walk through the maze or green with that Christmas tree smell, you get to pick. It’s something Frank Wadsworth has been doing for 40 years.

“We planted our first tree in 1976,” said Wadsworth, owner of the Wadsworth Christmas Tree Farm. “My father-in-law gave me 2,000 Virginia Pines. He said just plant them and come back in few years and you’ll have Christmas trees. I found out it was not the case.”

It’s a year-round job of planting, pruning, and shaping. But he says there’s just something special about having that live tree.

“The smell, the memories, and just being with your family out in the country.”

This is a family owned business five miles north of Wetumpka. Frank, his wife, his kids, and their spouses all pitch in. And when someone finds that “perfect” tree, it means something to the Wadsworth family.

“Each tree is kind of special. If somebody says I want that tree down there, I’m thinking I’ve been working on that tree for five years now. I know exactly which one you want.”

Some people come us as families, others on school field trips, and the goal is always the same. They want you to leave with a smile.

“We furnish the handsaws, and the wagons to take them out of the field, and if you can’t cut them we will cut them for you too.”

If you want to cut your own you better hurry. They have about 7,000 trees on the property but only a certain number can go every year so they have some big ones for next year. Frank advises folks to give him a call before you head that way just to make sure. They do have wagon rides, a bonfire, and plenty of cool photo ops too. Plus there are plenty of pre-cut trees brought in from Michigan.

For hours and information on tree availability check out their website. Happy tree hunting.
