LAKE MARTIN, AL (WSFA) -

The Lake Martin Resource Association recently received a $5,000 grant that'll be good enough to purchase 10 lighted buoys for Lake Martin and enough, for now, to make Kristin Beene smile.

Beene's restaurant shuttles boaters to and from the dock five miles away and the lighted buoys will be particularly helpful to those who boat at night.

"It allows them to be on the lake a little bit longer and come during the evening times join us for live music," said Beene, who manages Copper's Grill near Dadeville.

The donation comes from a recent golf tournament at the Stillwater's Resort in Tallapoosa County. It is John Thompson's mission to replace at least half of the buoys in the water with ones topped with solar lighting. The goal is 200.

"The solar panel is attached to the top. There's been an increase in boating on Lake Martin," said John Thompson, who heads up the Lake Martin Resource Association.

Alcohol is often a contributing factor in boating fatalities on Alabama waterways along with operator error. Marine Trooper Gary Buchanan says the new buoys can't come soon enough. So far this year, 19 people have died on Alabama waterways.

'"There are some instances where people run aground that a buoy could have made a difference if they had seen the hazard," said Buchanan.

Michael Langston was in charge of the golf tournament and says they will swing again for more lighted buoys next year.

"Yes sir, we agreed to do a two-year program right now so we'll do it again next year," Langston said.

Lake Martin currently has more than 400 regular buoys. Thompson says about 50 of them are lighted.

Turning up the light on water safety with 10 new 50-pound buoys.. coming soon to Lake Martin.
