OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - Opelika's 24th annual Victorian Front Porch Christmas tour begins Wednesday.
"The Tour started in 1993," said Roger Bell, Director of the Tour. "It started very small with about four homes, and now it includes about 60 homes and 90 different figures."
"It started with Jan Jones, an artist, and resident. She lived in the neighborhood and had the Santas and decorations left over from when she decorated shopping malls," Rose Ann Denson explained. Denson has volunteered with the Tour since it began. "We rode around the neighborhood and thought 'let's just start putting them out on porches and see how it turns out.'"
The Tour runs Wednesday through Sunday, Dec. 6 through 10. The tour begins on the corner of North 8th Street and 2nd Avenue. The event is a self-directed driving tour, except on Saturday night. Saturday, North 8th and 9th Streets will be closed to traffic to encourage visitors, neighbors, and friends to stroll through the neighborhood.
On the Friday night of the Tour, the City of Opelika sponsors Christmas in a Railroad town which includes wagon rides through the Victorian Front Porch Tour and tour guides.
Admission to the tour is free. More information can be found at this website.
