MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - By: Jannah Bailey with Child Protect

Last Friday night Montgomery had its 43rd homicide victim in 2017.  We have had more homicides so far in 2017 than in 2016 or 2015 and the year is not over yet.  We read about it on our smart phones, we hear about on the TV, and we get the thoughts and opinions of everyone on social media.  We then shake our heads and go back to business as usual.  "It's those people; those people with no moral compass; those people who give no thought of taking away a life from another; those people who are uneducated; those people who only think of themselves."

But what about the victims?  I am not talking about the victims that will never celebrate another holiday with loved ones or watch their children grow up or just live another day.  I am talking about the other victims.  The children who have bared witness to these brutal crimes.  You never see their tear streaked faces or hear their voices or feel their pain.  But we do.  At Child Protect we see those children who have witnessed these horrific actions and we are here so they can tell their story and we can help them slowly walk through the pain, hopefully gaining some understanding that life will go on and someday they may understand what happened.

As we approach this holiday season, let us take time to remember that children are watching us and are learning from us.  What if all of us in Montgomery make a promise to our children and to each other that we will give each other the gift of peace, and joy, and love, and hope.  That we will handle our differences in a way that that these precious children understand and will still be able to sleep at night.
