Fireflies Used in Cancer Research

Could those fireflies you see on summer nights help prevent cancer? Some researchers think so.

Researchers combined the gene that makes fireflies glow with a human gene that is found in a cell pathway often disrupted by cancer.

By combining these genes all the molecules involved in the cancer cell growth started glowing, allowing researchers to see the cell transactions that took place.

They hope to use this technology to develop drugs that can specially target the cells involved in tumor growth.
