COPY-Hispanic population continues to grow in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. The latest U-S Census figures show Alabama's Hispanic population continues to grow at a fast rate, but the actual growth may be larger than the numbers suggest.

Overall, the South's Hispanic population has tallied the fastest growth rate of any region in the country.

Census estimates show the Hispanic population in Alabama grew from 24-thousand-629 in 1990 to 98-thousand-388 in 2004.

The increase is greater than the population growth for black or white Alabama citizens.

But a University of Alabama at Birmingham professor says the number of Hispanic residents may be much larger.

A professor at U-A-B's Division of Preventive Medicine, Isabel Scarinci, says a large number of Alabama's Hispanic immigrants are undocumented and do not show up on Census reports.
