MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

A Mobile police officer was shot Friday morning on St. Madar Street, but the officer's injury is not life threatening, police said.

The officer was treated and released from USA Medical Center, according to police.

The shooting happened at a home on Live Oak Street near the intersection at St. Madar Street. That's two blocks north of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

Mobile Public Safety Director James Barber told FOX10 News the officer was serving a search warrant at the home, searching for some suspects wanted on felony warrants, when a female pitbull dog attacked him.

The officer fired several shots, according to Barber, killing the dog, and shooting himself in the calf on accident.

Two adult dogs and five puppies were removed from the home and taken to the city pound, where they are now up for adoption.

This incident happened as authorities were in the area conducting a police action called Operation Winter Storm, during which numerous warrants were being served at residences where police believe illegal drug activity was taking place.

No one was arrested at the home where the officer shot himself.

FOX10 News will continue to follow this developing story.
