MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Oscar Gamble, a 1970s Major League baseball star and Alabama native, died Wednesday at the age of 68, his agent confirmed to MLB.com.

Gamble, a lefty power and outfielder, played 17 Major League seasons - seven with the Yankees. He also played for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers.

Gamble hit 200 career home runs with 666 RBI. He posted a .265 career batting average and finished his career with more walks than strikeouts. In 1977 Gamble was sixth in the American League with 31 home runs while playing for the Chicago White Sox.

He was widely known for his large Afro hairstyle and iconic baseball card.

Gamble, a Ramer native and Carver High School alumnus, was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. 

He returned to Montgomery after his retirement from baseball.
