AUBURN, AL (WSFA/NBC) - Two Auburn City School teachers are in the running to be named the state's teacher of the year.
What started out as a list of more than 170 is now down to 16, and finalists Blake Busbin of Auburn High School and Brittney Duncan of Wrights Mill Road Elementary School? say that their dedication to the community and their students is what got them on the list.
"Everything we do in our class is very much student-centered. says Busbin. "So who I am as a teacher is a reflection of what they, the students, do and what they put forth. So I don't really see it as a personal honor, but an honor of what my students and I have done together,"
This is the first year that Auburn City Schools has had two teachers in the final 16.
"I didn't know how to really feel and think about it from the get-go because I was just so surprised, and to be considered as one of the top 16 in the state of Alabama, and the caliber of teachers that we have in the state is amazing," says Duncan.
The winner will be announced on May 9.
