Editorial: Absurdity Has Hit a New Level

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Absurdity has hit a new level as AP reported a Massachusetts family is looking for a new preschool for their 4-year-old daughter because her current school has barred the use of the term "best friend."

Christine Hartwell says her daughter, Julia, appeared sad recently when she came home from her preschool. The little girl told her mother she was upset because her teacher told her she couldn't call one of her classmates her "best friend."

The school wrote a letter to the Hartwell's stating, it had been their experience that the use of the term "best friend," even when used in a loving way, can lead some children feeling excluded.  With that logic I sense the cat population will soon be chiming in as they are upset that dogs are considered man's best friend.

I am surprised I am not psychologically scarred.  When I was dating my girlfriend through college…. now my wife, my mother in law always introduced me to others as Melanie's best friend.  How could she have done that to me or us for that matter.

What are these people doing to our children?  IF we continue to coddle our children, make them conform to these unrealistic values of the perfect society where no one offends, everyone wins, and everyone receives a participation medal, we will end up in a country unable to lead, grow and prosper.

These folks need to suck it up …life is tough, but if we get a bump or scrape along the way, we will be better prepared to take on the challenges life presents us.
