GEORGIANA, AL (WSFA) - In its first season in 30 years, the Georgiana Track and Field Team finds itself in pretty good standing. Several of its members, both boys and girls, will be headed to Cullman to compete in the State Championship.
"No question, these student athletes possibly winning a state title next week will change their lives forever, not to mention the morale of the school community," said Butler County School System Superintendent John Strycker.
At the 1A sectionals, Martavius Payton secured the goal in the men's high jump, and LeCedric Haynes won gold in the shot put. Haynes' win propelled him into the state's No. 1 ranked player in division 1A shot put.
Haynes isn't alone with a No. 1 ranking. Payton is ranked No. 1 in the state's 1A division for the high jump and that's impressive in its own right, and not just because Payton is a 10th-grader.
"We don't even have a high jump mat to practice on at this time, yet we have an athlete who is ranked No. 1 in the state with very little practice in the event – and he is only in 10th grade. No question that with the proper equipment and training he should someday hold the state record…and that would be life changing," said Strycker.
Both the boys' and girls' 400 meter relay teams will represent Georgiana High School in the state championship meets. Representing the boys team will be: Jamarcus Sims, Christopher Mixon, LeCedric Haynes and Christian Williams. The team ran the second fastest 1A time on the way to claiming the silver medal.
On the girls' side: Zykeria McClain, Takyra Curry, Jakiriah Rivers, Michaiah Austin, and Charnetta Jones won silver medals and will represent Georgiana at the state meet.
The State Championship will be held next week.
