Former longtime Eufaula coach dies at 96

ABBEVILLE, AL (WSFA) - Former Eufaula High School basketball coach Jack Powell has died. He was 96.

Powell spent 18 of his 20 years in high school coaching at Eufaula where his teams compiled a 364-178 record, advanced to the state tournament nine times and won a state championship in 1953. He also coached at Livingston State University.

According to the Alabama High School Athletic Association, Powell was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.

The old Eufaula high school gym named in his honor serves as the home of the Jack Powell Youth Basketball League. He is a graduate of Pleasant Home High School and Auburn University.

Funeral services are set Saturday, May 19, at First Baptist Church in Eufaula. A visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m., followed by the service.
