ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) - Alex City police have begun extra patrols in a usually quiet neighborhood after three separate shootings.
According to Alex City Police, the Springhill community off Highway 280 West has seen three shootings recently. The first two were nothing more than people shooting into the air or on the ground. The third turned out to be more serious.
Police say a shooting happened Friday night in the 2000 block of County Road. In this shooting, the victim lost a lot of blood at the scene and at the hospital. The man was taken to UAB in Birmingham where he is currently in critical, but stable, condition and hooked to a ventilator.
The victim's aunt, Lena Glenn, identified him as Deatrice Stevens. She says she is considering moving from the town after the shootings.
"I'm telling you the week before, they were shooting right up there. It's something every weekend. The week before my neighbor was fighting,"said Glenn.
Investigator Drew Machen says the case, for now, is at a standstill. He says the reason is potential witnesses aren't talking and the victim can't because of his condition.
"You know when we come up empty on some things, it gets more frustrating," said Machen.
Police say the shootings are unusual for Alex City which is normally known for its low crime rate.
