Mobile buying more SUVs for police officers

Mobile Police seem to prefer SUVs to cars for their officers, so the department wants to buy more of them.

Public Safety Director James Barber said the department currently has 80 pursuit-rated Chevy Tahoes for officers. The new SUVs will replace Ford Crown Victorias and Chevy Caprices.

"But both Crown Vic and Caprice no longer make those sedans and what we kept seeing was, not only did they quit making them, they kept getting smaller. And you can see the amount of equipment and computers and stuff that these guys have to carry and, so, basically, for a patrol officer, this is their office," said Barber.

The vehicles range in price from $34,000 to $41,000 depending on the equipment inside.
