MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A candidate for Alabama’s Second Congressional District is giving away an AR-15, which he says is a way to draw importance to the Second Amendment.

Rich Hobson’s campaign announced Tuesday that it will hold a drawing to give away the AR-15, made by Smith & Wesson. According to the release, entries can be made until noon on Memorial Day when the winner will be chosen at random.

Hobson says he believes it is fitting to hold the drawing on Memorial Day.

“America was founded on the idea that people were made to rule themselves. The framers of our Constitution acknowledged that our rights were from God and that our government was to be formed only by the consent of the governed. This is something I believe to my core,” said Hobson. “But our Founding Fathers also realized that freedom is not possible unless our citizens act with self-restraint, govern their own morality, and take responsibility for every basic need in our life. To that end, true Americans are expected to be hard-working, responsible, and prepared. Because of that, I believe that it is right and proper for every family in the country to own an AR-15 Defense Rifle.”

According to the entry website, participants must be at least 18-years of age and meet all legal requirements to be a gun owner under federal, state, and local law.

Once a winner is announced, Hobson says their information will be provided to Southern Outdoor Sports in Dothan, which will comply with all the rules, background checks, and transfer action in keeping with federal law.

Hobson is running against incumbent Rep. Martha Roby. The GOP primary also includes Bobby Bright, Tommy Amason and Barry Moore.

On the Democratic side, Tabitha Isner and Audri Scott Williams have entered the race.

Asked about the contest, Roby's office said she had no comment other than that she was a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment with an NRA endorsement.

Bright said most people know his stance on guns and added, "I need a new AR-15 --who knows, assuming it's legal,  maybe I'll enter the raffle myself!"

The primary is set for June 5.
