Baker High School Valedictorian with impressive resume

MOBILE COUNTY, AL (WALA) -

When it comes to academics, Baker High School senior Kaycee Tate is kind of a big deal.

She received close to half a million dollars in scholarships from different schools, scored a 33 on her ACT and she's Baker High's valedictorian.

"I didn't see it as that big of a deal when i first was named valedictorian," Tate said.

It wasn't until younger classmates started asking to take pictures with her at an awards banquet, that Tate realized the impact she was making.

She said, "I'm going into engineering. They don't really see that as something that a girl can do. Even though it is 2018, there are still girls that feel that way and I just really hope to be kind of something that young girls can look up to."

Tate is going to Xavier University in Louisiana. She was offered their highest scholarship.

She plans to double major in computer science and computer engineering. She expects to have two degrees in five years and land her dream job at SpaceX.

"The project that I've been thinking of that will signify, hey you've actually made it is working on artificial intelligence and spaceships just for trips that will be several months long," Tate said.

She has this advice for younger students, "There will always be people who will try to tear you down, people who want to do better than you and will do almost anything to accomplish that, but always just stay in your lane. Kind of have a tunnel vision when you have your goal. Just make sure that you're always striving toward that no matter what obstacles you face."

After Xavier, Tate plans on completing her double major at either Georgia Tech or the University of Notre Dame.
