MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - While Zestlan Simmons is usually found teaching advanced placement English at Booker T. Washington Magnet High, for the next year she'll be traveling as Alabama's Teacher of the Year.
Simmons will travel across the state, speaking to various groups as the full-time ambassador for education and the teaching profession.
On Tuesday, Simmons was given a car to help her be comfortable while she travels courtesy of the Alabama Farmer's Federation. Along with the car, ALFA will also cover the cost of auto insurance.
Simmons was announced as Alabama's Teacher of the Year during a ceremony on May 9. She also represents Alabama as the official candidate for the National Teacher of the Year Award.
A Montgomery-native, Simmons said her desire to teach started early as a kindergarten teacher at Resurrection Catholic School. She is a national board-certified teacher and a mentor to new teachers at MPS.
