MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Wednesday was a special day for both Lee basketball star Zippy Broughton and the West End Boys and Girls Club of the River Region.

Wednesday was declared "Zippy Day" in honor of the Alabama Ms. Basketball, Hitchcock Award winner and Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year.

"Just being able to impact other kids in this community, just me being so young and be able to have this opportunity to grant them $11,000 has been just awesome," said Broughton.

The $11,000 Broughton referred to is from her winning the Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year Award as well as Broughton winning $10,000 because she wrote a winning essay about her favorite charity.

"Really, she went out of her way to write the essay and to win it, I mean, that's just an accomplishment in itself for the city of Montgomery. We just wanted to do something special for this young lady," said Chief Professional Officer of the Boys and Girls Club of the River Region Rick Jackson.

Broughton will continue her career as a student-athlete at Rutgers.
