MOBILE COUNTY, AL (WALA) -

Surfers in Dauphin Island not too worried about the approaching Subtropical Storm Alberto, instead, taking full advantage of some good surf.

Storm swells bringing out dozens of local surfers.

"Unless there is something tropical in the gulf, we don't have any waves in the summertime," Kenny Guynn said.

Good surf for Randy Loftis, but not for folks visiting from out of town.

"We've been doing this all of our lives but people come down from out of town and they get out there and they don't understand how powerful the undertow is. Stay out of the water," Loftis warned.

Mike Bianchini is one of those visitors.

"Man, it's crazy out there.  I'm a pretty good swimmer, but there's no way. This isn't anything like Lake Michigan, where I'm from," Bianchini said.

For others, the storm did dampen their Memorial Day weekend plans.

"My daughters were here and we were supposed to go to the Dave Matthews concert and so that got postponed," Karenda Plotka said.

Plotka, though, is prepared just in case the weather gets worse.

"I've got water. I've got gas. I'm from South Florida originally so I kind of just batten the hatches and prepare as much as I can," Plotka said.

Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier said there are sand bags available at the public works department for anyone in low lying areas.
