COFFEE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - Coffee County voters will have two candidates to choose from in the June primary for sheriff.
Current Sheriff Dave Sutton is looking to stay in office. He will face Skip Neuwien. Neuwien has worked for law enforcement in Coffee County for 15 years – 10 of those years spent working in Enterprise.
Right now, Neuwein works as an investigator with the District Attorney's office in Coffee County. He says he decided to run because he believes more fiscal transparency is needed in the sheriff's office along with more training and productivity for deputies.
He says his work at the district attorney's office has prepared him to effectively lead the county.
"Actually doing police work and being an investigator with the district attorney's office gives me a better perspective of what law enforcement is all about and getting the law enforcement job done to keep our families safe in Coffee County," said Neuwein.
Neuwien says he will also push to create safer schools for students – having three children in local schools in Enterprise.
"We need to arm personnel in schools that want to be armed," he said.
Sheriff Sutton declined an interview. There are no democratic candidates running for office.
