Auburn's Casey Mize goes No. 1 in MLB Draft

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Auburn University baseball player Casey Mize has been taken as the No. 1 overall draft pick in the MLB Draft. Mize will head to the Detroit Tigers.

Mize is Auburn's first-ever No. 1 overall draft pick and the first SEC Pitcher to go No. 1 overall in the MLB Draft since David Price (Vandy) went to Tampa in 2007.

"I can't. I really can't put it into words," Mize said. "Probably the best moment in my life and I just reminisce on the long days and the hard work and all these people that have supported me to this point and all that is running through my mind. When it comes to this moment it's everything I've dreamed of."

"He told his Mom he wanted to be an Auburn Tiger when he was 7 years old and to see him come undrafted from Springville High School in state, come three years at Auburn and be the first pick overall in the major league draft it's just special," said Coach Butch Thompson.

Mize has developed into one of the best pitchers in the country, thanks in large part to his 4-pitch repertoire. He has commanded the ball impressively well this season and his strike-to-walk ratio sold Detroit to grab him at the top spot.
