MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Montgomery Regional Airport now offers a direct flight to and from Washington, D.C.
The first flight from the nation's capital to Alabama's capital touched down in Montgomery Thursday morning. On board, Millbrook native Marceia Seabrooks. She said, "flight was good, quick actually. It was only about an hour and a half."
Seabrooks now lives in Washington, D.C. She and her husband brought their new daughter to meet her mom in Alabama. The Seabrooks said a direct flight will mean more family visits.
"It has always been a challenge, since I have kids, to come home, because it's hard with the connecting flights. So, when I found out they had this straight-through flight, I thought it was amazing and a perfect opportunity to bring my baby to meet mom and the rest of my family," added Seabrooks.
Washington is the top destination for travelers flying out of Montgomery. Meg Lewis with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce said, "This is a necessary flight."
Necessary because it's a cornerstone of economic development and tourism. Lewis adds, "We know that tons of business travelers, Air Force travelers are going to utilize this flight."
"It's a great thing, for me anyway, because this is home. I can come home to visit my mom, who is getting older, more often," Seabrooks said.
For now, American Airlines is operating just one flight in, one flight out between Montgomery and Washington, D.C.
Montgomery Regional Airport already offers flights daily to Dallas, Atlanta, and Charlotte. It also offers flight to Orlando every Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday.
