LEE CO., AL (WSFA) - So your kid wants to be a rock star? Maybe you should head over to Lee County this summer.
"We have our summer Rock Band camp," said Tim Spicer, with the Spicer Music Store.
The store is filled with instruments and rooms for private lessons. This week we have some live music to go along with it. The idea for the camp started 12 years ago.
"We put together a little music camp in our home," said Tom Spicer, with the Spicer Music Store. "We helped kids learn how to play and work as a band."
So they moved the camp to the garage, then a church, then a private school, now it's at the store. Most of the kids have some musical background, but they can be beginners too. For many of them, it'll be the first time they've ever played with a band.
"They pick out their own cover song," said Tim Spicer. "We teach them guitar solos, harmonies, drum fills, we bring in a professional songwriter, the whole nine yards."
There are camps all summer long. Instructors say it's fun to watch shy kids come out of their shell and turn into rock stars.
"It is like living the life of a rock star," said 10-year old Alexander.
"Even if I mess up you won't be able to hear it because the whole band is playing," said 8-year old Georgia.
When they're not playing as a group the students go into individual sessions where they work on their instrument of choice. There's even a songwriting session where they learn how to craft some lyrics. The whole week long their working on a song to play at the end of the week.
"I think we sound pretty good," said Georgia.
"I wanna be a rock star," said Alexander.
He's well on his way and it looks like the whole group could be on the big stage one day. If you're interested in a rock band camp at Spicer's in Auburn, they have camps for all age and skill levels: https://spicersmusic.com/
