MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Transportation Security Administration is issuing a reminder to passengers after another firearm was found during a checkpoint at the Montgomery Regional Airport.
According to the TSA, on Tuesday agents discovered a loaded handgun in a passenger's carry-on bag. The agents immediately alerted local law enforcement, who took possession of the bag and firearm and escorted the passenger out of the checkpoint area.
TSA officials say while firearms may be transported in checked baggage, they are prohibited in carry-on baggage. Firearms transported in checked baggage must be declared to the airline and in a proper carrying case and unloaded.
As a reminder to passengers, the TSA says it is important to thoroughly search bags for any potential dangerous weapons or prohibited items before departing for the airport.
"Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the checkpoint," said Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson. "Our advice is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items."
TSA officials say this is the fourth firearm discovered by agents this year at the MGM security checkpoint. This matches the total number of firearms found there in 2017.
