DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - It's been 15 years since Dothan has hosted a body building competition, but that's about to change.
"I spoke to him [promoter Roland Huff] one time and said, 'You should consider Dothan,'" said Dothan Athletic Club assistant manager Jim McCraney. "It's a hub. It's a sports city."
The NPC Body B1 Classic will be held in one week on July 21 at the Dothan Civic Center marking the sport's return to the Circle City.
"I think it's awesome for it to come back to the city and expose Dothan to what there is out there and what we have to offer for bodybuilding," said competitor Lana Jones.
The event is divided up into several different divisions including bikini, figure, physique, and body building which all have separate qualifications.
"All of those encompass different types of bodies," said Huff. "Some types of bodies are achievable for one type of person and some are achievable for another type of person."
McCraney and Monica Gondim have been training together for the last few months. McCraney has been competing since 1990, and while this is Gondim's first competition, she feels like she's already found her calling.
"This is what I want," said Gondim. "I feel like this is my calling. I feel like I'm really good at this. I really want to do more shows like this and maybe do this professionally."
If you're interested in checking out the NPC Body B1 Classic, the doors will open up at 9 a.m. for the pre-judging portion and then again at 6 p.m. for the finals.
