MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Friday, Auburn University at Montgomery inched one step closer to full NCAA status the school announced. The school was approved to advance to the third and final year of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee membership process.
This past athletic year the Warhawks were a provisional member of the Gulf South Conference. Each team played a full conference schedule but were not eligible for postseason play.
If, over the course of this next year, all benchmarks are completed then AUM will be eligible for both NCAA and GSC postseason play during the 2019-20 academic year.
"We took another step in the right direction today," said AUM Director of Athletics Jessie Rosa. "Doing just that is what this entire process has been about and what will ultimately elevate the AUM experience for all of our students. The willingness of other units on campus to partner with us in ensuring we have adequate processes in place was instrumental in our approval to Year 3. They, along with our student-athletes, coaches and staff members are the reason why we are able to celebrate today."
There are more than 300 colleges and universities on the Division II level.
