MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - This summer, Montgomery Regional Airport added two new destinations for their travelers to visit. The airport now offers direct flights from Montgomery to Orlando and from Montgomery to Washington D.C.
"We've known for years that Reagan National was a destination that we would certainly like to offer our customers and we've been working at least ten years trying to get that," Mark Wnuk, the executive assistant of Montgomery Regional Airport, said.
Wnuk said that Washington D.C. has been one of the top destinations for travelers flying out of Montgomery for years, and that they needed a direct flight to satisfy their customers.
"The flight to Reagan National we've known for years that that's one of our top destinations," Wnuk said. "The numbers just got too high for the airline to ignore, so we've got to give credit to our passengers too who are using American to fly to Baltimore and then connect to Reagan."
Wnuk said so far, they've seen more people take advantage of the direct flight to Washington D.C. as opposed to the direct flight to Orlando.
"We're having a good response for American, because American is a known carrier and it's a popular destination. Via started off slow. We had some operational issues starting up, but that service is picking up," Wnuk said.
American Airlines is the airline offering the direct flight to Washington D.C. and Via Airlines is the carrier offering the flight to Orlando.
"We're hopeful that it's really gonna take off here as summer turns into fall and people are looking to go somewhere for the holidays," Wnuk said.
They're also hoping that these direct flights will encourage people from Washington D.C. and Orlando to travel to Montgomery.
"It opens up doorways for people in the Orlando area and the Reagan National area to come to Montgomery to see the things we have here," Wnuk said.
Via Airlines offers flights to Orlando every Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Each flight holds fifty passengers.
American Airlines also provides daily flights to Dallas, Atlanta, and Charlotte from the Montgomery Regional Airport.
