Resident says Wetumpka's Balm Road a Street of Speed

Eugene Webber moved out to rural Wetumpka 7 years ago. He has a lot of land and peace and quiet. But sometimes that quiet is interrupted by the roar of car engines.

The speed limit on Balm Rd. off Highway 9 is 45 miles per hour but Webber says people go 20-30 miles over the speed limit, and he says last week a car past him going about 90 miles per hour.

WSFA's Zapper 12 clocked a lot of drivers going 10-20 mph over the posted limit.

"I've got a 10 and a 12 year old and they can't ride their bikes because people go down the road 20-30 mph over the limit," Webber said.

Webber says he realizes police officers can't be out here all the time, but he says right now it's not enough. "They've probably been out here 3 times in the last 7 years."

Webber says most of the traffic is using his street as a cut through to and from Coosa County. He says there should be more speed limit signs to go along with more enforcement and maybe that will slow folks down.

WSFA 12 News contacted the Elmore County Transportation Department to see about adding some new speed limit signs. County officials say they will go out and do a study on Balm Rd. and see if they need more signs.

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office has also promised to be out there more often. So, if you drive down Balm Road, consider yourself warned.
