Education: Bachelor's degree from West Point and law degree from the University of Alabama.

Professional background: Worked as an Etowah County assistant district attorney and lawyer in private practice before getting into politics.

Political background: Ran unsuccessful campaigns for Etowah County district attorney and circuit judge before being appointed circuit judge in 1992 by then-Gov. Guy Hunt. Elected to a six-year term in 1994. Elected chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in 2000, but removed from office in November 2003.
