Sessions says Miers shows integrity by withdrawing her nomination

CAPITOL HILL (AP)_An Alabama senator says Harriet Mier's withdrawal letter is proof "of her integrity and decency."

Jeff Sessions, a member of the Judiciary Committee, said the Texas lawyer put the country and the President ahead of her personal interests.

In a statement today, the Mobile Republican urged Bush to review a list of top Supreme Court candidates and send to the Senate an individual with outstanding legal skills who share his judicial philosophy.

He said if that happens, "the confirmation process will take care of itself."

Miers had faced opposition from the right and the left, and mounting criticism about her qualifications to be a Supreme Court justice.

Bush blames her withdrawal on a clash with the Senate. Senators wanted the release of internal White House documents that the administration insists are protected by executive privilege.

Miers will keep her current job as White House counsel.
