MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A bill to ban the transfer of campaign donations from one political action committee to another has been approved by the Alabama House Thursday.
It was the fifth year in a row that the House has voted to ban the practice known as "PAC to PAC transfers." It's a tactic some say is used to keep the public from knowing who is supporting a candidate. The bill died in the Senate each of those years.
The bill passed the House today on a 97-1 vote.
The sponsor, Representative Jeff McLaughlin of Guntersville, says he hopes fallout from national scandals concerning abuses of the campaign financing process might motivate senators to pass the bill.
The bill bans all transfers from one PAC to another, with no exceptions.
