Fire Miners Die in Kentucky Explosion

HOLMES MILL, Ky. (AP) Federal mine officials say three people are dead and two are missing after a coal mine explosion in eastern Kentucky. The blast occurred a little after midnight at the Darby Mine Number One in Harlan County, while a maintenance shift was on duty. A spokeswoman for the U-S Mine Safety and Health Administration says the three dead miners were found by rescue workers.


UPDATE: Five coal miners have died in a blast at an eastern Kentucky coal mine. Kentucky's governor says one man was able to get out alive. He says rescue teams initially found three dead workers, then came across two more. There's no word on the condition of the surviving miner. A federal mine safety official says the explosion at Harlan County's Darby Mine Number One happened just after midnight.
