COPY-Commission appoints interim director at Alabama Fire College

MONTGOMERY, Ala. A state commission has appointed a temporary director for the Alabama Fire College, replacing one chosen by state two-year college Chancellor Roy Johnson, who relinquished control of the college.

The Alabama Fire College and Personnel Training Commission met in Johnson's office yesterday to name Wayne Murry of Scottsboro as the interim director. Murry is a 20-year employee of the college in Tuscaloosa.

Johnson's appointee, John Blue, was reassigned as an adviser. Blue had replaced Bill Langston, who retired in a management shake-up last month.

The change in control came after weeks of conflict between Johnson and the commission over the direction of the training program for firefighters from throughout the state.

The Fire College has come under scrutiny after Langston hired Johnson's children and gave scholarships from a private foundation to the daughters of one of Johnson's top deputies and a legislator.
