MONTGOMERY, Ala. Practice water safety if you are boating over the Memorial Day weekend. That advice comes from Governor Bob Riley for what's expected to be a busy three-day holiday weekend of on most of Alabama's waterways.

Here a few safe boating tips:

- Always wear a life jacket

- Make sure your navigating lights work before dark.

- Tell someone at home where you are going in the boat.

- Don't drink and boat

Alabama Marine Police say the fine for B-U-I, or boating under the influence, first offense can be anywhere from 600 to two thousand dollars -- and up to one year in jail.

The governor proclaimed the week of May 20th through the 26th as Safe Boating Week in Alabama.
