DECATUR, Ala. A Decatur woman whose late husband was the most decorated U.S. soldier in the Vietnam War spent her morning honoring him and other fallen soldiers.
Faye Hooper says recognizing soldiers on Memorial Day is the least Americans can do. She and others gathered this morning at Roselyn Cemetery.Staff Sgt. Joe Ronnie Hooper earned 37 medals in Vietnam. His medal count included the Medal of Honor, two Silver Stars, six Bronze stars and eight Purple Hearts.The Army credited him with killing 115 North Vietnamese.Hooper died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the Kentucky Derby in 1979 at age 40.He was a Washington native who moved to Decatur with his wife.
